Yes, another one of my Orlando portraits. Although, I really tried for more detail and what not in this one.
So, he's some kind of necromancer with two lovely pet ravens (modeled by two of my murder) with a ghoul manservant. Yes, there are strong influences from WoW and George Romero for the ghoul. And for some reason, this mage has a trapped faerie for his light source.
Playing around with lighting and textures, really tried to think about how different surfaces would react to the light. And then I got distracted doing the tattoos, and must have spent two hours on the little lines, just doodling and spacing them out, when it had all started as the big design on his forehead and the thick lines on the back of his hand.
The original picture didn't show his right hand, so I had to use another bit of reference, and ended up trying to make it more scaly/dead, like he's a necromancer slowly turning into a lich. I like liches.
So, enjoy, and if you can think of some critiques, please throw them at me.
Edit: Well, it's about that time for Ballistic's Exotique book, and I want to try again. I'll keep going every year until I get in. 8P
So I reworked quite a bit of this painting. Having a new hard drive, so I can have a huge scratchdisk, means I can work with MUCH larger images, and do the detail work better.

The colour use is, as always fantastic. The lightsourcing is innovative and draws the eye beautifully.
What I wondered is: what would happen if you drew the image together using a layer purely for atmospheric lighting? I do this sometimes: I make anew layer over everything, and choose the two light colours for my foreground/background colours I then pull a straight gradient over the whole layer, so thaat the whole canvas is one massive gradient of colourful DOOM. Then! I set the layer mode to "Overlay" and pull the opacity down to where it doesn't look over saturated and retarded, and it just... pulls everything together. Give it a try some time. You may not like it, you might find it cool.
Just another technique I found, see. I think you may like it.
Otherwise, WOW THOSE TATS and YAY RAVENS.
Love! xxx
Hmmmm....I've long since started putting little glowy edges where the light is hitting, to help soften and show off the fabric. (I have fucked up eyes, I see halos and glowing around damn near everything). But I never thought of doing the whole gradient thing. I am definitely going to have to try that with the next piece, see how that turns out. Getting me thinking can be pretty dangerous 8P
i think it took me an hour and a half or so to do the tattooing. i was eating dinner and watching a documentary at the same time, so I didn't really notice how long it took me.
and yes, i have pet ravens. Thought, Memory, and Zim. They are awesome pets, but they are also very demanding, rambuncious, bratty, playful, and destructive. Not a pet for people who don't have lots of time on their hands.
